About the pulmonology department
Breathing problems are frightening, and in a city with the air quality of the Delhi NCR they are common. Pulmonology deals with the lungs and airways: asthma, COPD, chest infections, and persistent cough that has not been explained.
Much of the work is getting long-term conditions properly controlled — which usually means correcting inhaler technique, adjusting treatment, and identifying triggers — so that patients stop cycling through repeated acute attacks.
When to see a pulmonologist
The first two are emergencies. The rest are worth an appointment.
- Severe breathlessness at rest, or being unable to complete a sentence — emergency
- Blue lips, confusion or drowsiness with breathing difficulty — emergency
- Coughing up blood
- A cough lasting more than three weeks
- Wheezing, or breathlessness on exertion that is getting worse
- Asthma needing a reliever inhaler frequently, or waking you at night
- Repeated chest infections
- Loud snoring with daytime sleepiness or witnessed pauses in breathing
If you are not sure, treat it as urgent
It is always better to be assessed and sent home than to wait at home with something serious. Emergency care needs no appointment.
What we provide
Asthma management
Diagnosis, the right inhaler used the right way, trigger identification, and a written plan for what to do in an attack.
COPD care
Long-term management, reducing flare-ups, and support to stop smoking, which changes the course of the disease more than any drug.
Chest infection and pneumonia
Assessment and treatment, including deciding who needs admission and who can be treated at home.
Persistent cough
Systematic investigation of a cough that has lasted weeks, rather than repeated courses of cough syrup.
Breathlessness assessment
Working out whether breathlessness is coming from the lungs, the heart or elsewhere — often with cardiology.
Inpatient respiratory care
Treatment of acute respiratory illness, with intensive care support where breathing needs assistance.
How we investigate
Respiratory assessment combines measuring how well the lungs work with imaging of the chest.
- Lung function testing to measure airflow and response to treatment
- Chest imaging
- Blood oxygen measurement
- Sputum and blood testing where infection is suspected
- Allergy assessment where asthma triggers need identifying
What to expect
So that nothing about the visit is a surprise.
- 1
History and examination
What the breathing problem feels like, when it happens, and what makes it better or worse.
- 2
Lung testing
Breathing tests and chest imaging, chosen to match your symptoms rather than run as routine.
- 3
Discussion of what we found
What the results show and what is driving the symptoms, explained clearly.
- 4
A treatment plan, and how to use it
Medication and inhaler technique checked in person, with a written plan for what to do if symptoms flare.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my breathlessness is from my lungs or my heart?
The symptoms overlap a great deal, and telling them apart is a common reason for referral. Breathlessness that comes with wheeze and cough more often points to the airways; breathlessness with ankle swelling or that wakes you flat in bed more often points to the heart. Testing settles it — and both departments are on the same site.
Is my inhaler technique important?
It is one of the most important things in asthma care. A significant share of poorly controlled asthma is not resistant disease but medication that never reaches the airways. Bring your inhalers to the appointment and we will check how you use them.
Can asthma be cured?
Asthma is a long-term condition rather than something that is cured, but with the right treatment most people have few or no symptoms and live entirely normally. The aim of treatment is exactly that — not simply relieving attacks after they start.
