About our ambulance

Ambulance support helps patients reach the hospital when travelling by car is not safe or not possible, and covers monitored transfers between facilities.

The value of an ambulance is not only the vehicle: it is that assessment and treatment can begin on the way in, and that the emergency department knows what is arriving.

When to call an ambulance rather than drive

If any of these apply, call for an ambulance instead of driving the patient yourself.

  • Chest pain, or suspected heart attack
  • Difficulty breathing, or a patient turning blue
  • Suspected stroke — face drooping, weakness on one side, slurred speech
  • Unconsciousness, or a patient who cannot be roused
  • A fit that will not stop, or repeated fits
  • Serious injury, a fall from height, or a road accident
  • Severe bleeding that will not stop
  • Any patient who may deteriorate on the way, or would be unsafe sitting in a car

What we provide

  • Emergency transport to hospital

Bringing patients in when travelling independently would not be safe.

  • Care during the journey

Monitoring and treatment on the way, so care starts before arrival rather than at the door.

  • Inter-facility transfer

Monitored transfer of patients who need to move between facilities.

  • Advance notice to the emergency department

The department is told what is coming, so the right team and equipment are ready on arrival.

What to expect

So that nothing about the visit is a surprise.

  1. 1

    The call

Call our ambulance number, or 108 for the national emergency service, and describe what has happened.

  2. 2

    Dispatch and travel

The crew is briefed on the way, and assessment or treatment can begin as soon as they reach the patient.

  3. 3

    Monitoring en route

Vital signs are monitored throughout the journey, and the hospital is told what to expect before arrival.

  4. 4

    Handover

The crew hands over directly to the emergency team, with everything observed on the way passed on in the same conversation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I call an ambulance?

108 is the national emergency ambulance number, it is free to call, and it is the fastest route in a genuine emergency. Our own ambulance contact number is available from the hospital reception.

Should I drive the patient myself instead?

Not if they might deteriorate on the way. In chest pain, breathing difficulty, suspected stroke, unconsciousness or serious injury, an ambulance means treatment starts sooner and the hospital is expecting you. For a minor problem, driving in is usually fine.

What should I do while waiting for an ambulance?

Stay with the patient. Keep them still and comfortable, loosen tight clothing, and do not give food or water to anyone who is drowsy, confused or having difficulty breathing. Gather their medicines and any reports if someone else can do that. If they stop breathing and you know CPR, start it.

This service operates 24 hours a day.
