Having family close by helps most patients recover. It also has to be balanced against rest, infection control, and the needs of other patients sharing the same space — which is why hospitals put limits on visiting.

Visiting hours differ by ward
Intensive care has tighter restrictions than the general wards, and they can change depending on how unwell the patients on a ward are. Please check the current visiting arrangements with the nursing staff on your relative’s ward.
What we ask of visitors
Ordinary courtesies that make a real difference on a ward.
- Please do not visit if you have a fever, cough, cold, diarrhoea or any infection — the people around your relative are less able to fight it off than you are
- Clean your hands when entering and leaving the ward
- Keep to the number of visitors allowed at one time, and keep voices low
- Do not bring food for the patient without checking with the nursing staff first; many patients are on restricted diets
- Do not sit on beds, and do not use another patient's belongings or space
- Please do not photograph or film other patients, staff or ward areas — it is their privacy too
- Nominate one family member as the main point of contact, so information is consistent and staff are not repeating themselves
If you are staying as an attendant
One family member usually stays with the patient in the general wards.
- Keep the patient's medicines, reports and discharge papers together in one place
- Write down questions as they come to you, so you can ask the doctor on their round
- Ask the nursing staff before helping the patient move, eat or go to the bathroom after surgery
- Keep valuables at home; hospitals are busy public places
