When to see a general surgeon
Some of these are elective and can wait for an appointment. The first is not.

Frequently asked questions
Does a hernia always need surgery?
A hernia will not heal by itself, and repair is the only definitive treatment. Small, painless hernias are sometimes watched rather than operated on immediately, but a hernia that becomes painful, hard or irreducible needs urgent attention — that can mean the blood supply to trapped tissue is at risk.
How soon can I get back to work after laparoscopic surgery?
For keyhole gallbladder or hernia surgery, many people return to desk work within one to two weeks, and to heavy lifting or manual work considerably later. Your surgeon will give you a figure for your operation and your job rather than a general one.
Do I need my gallbladder removed if gallstones were found by chance?
Not necessarily. Many gallstones never cause trouble and are left alone. Surgery is usually recommended once they cause pain, inflammation, jaundice or repeated attacks.
Is piles surgery painful?
Most piles never need surgery — diet, medication and minor office procedures resolve the majority. Where an operation is needed, discomfort afterwards is normal and is managed with pain relief; your surgeon will explain what to expect for the specific procedure recommended.
