Patients arrive from the emergency department, from the operation theatres after major surgery, or from a general ward if they become more unwell. The critical care team looks after all of them.
Who is treated in intensive care
Admission is a clinical decision made by the treating team.

Can I visit a relative in the ICU?
Yes, but visiting is more restricted than on a general ward — usually limited numbers, at set times, and sometimes suspended if a patient is unstable or an infection risk requires it. Please check the current arrangements with the nursing staff on the unit.
How long will my relative be in intensive care?
It ranges from overnight observation after surgery to a much longer stay in severe illness, and it is rarely possible to predict early on. The team will explain what specifically needs to improve before a move to a general ward is safe.
Why is my relative sedated?
Sedation makes treatments that would otherwise be very distressing — a breathing tube in particular — tolerable, and it reduces the body's oxygen demand. It is adjusted continuously and reduced as soon as it safely can be.
Who is looking after my relative?
The critical care team, working with the specialty involved in the underlying problem — cardiology, pulmonology, general surgery and so on. Ask the nursing staff who the consultant on duty is; you are entitled to know.
