Frequently asked questions
Do I have to buy medicines from the hospital pharmacy?
No. You are free to obtain prescribed medicines from any pharmacy you choose. The hospital pharmacy is there for convenience — particularly at discharge, or when treatment should start straight away.
Can I get a repeat of a long-term prescription?
Repeat prescriptions need to come from the treating doctor, so book a review appointment before you run out rather than on the day. That review is also when the dose gets checked against how you are actually doing.
What should I do if a medicine causes side effects?
Contact the department that prescribed it. Do not simply stop some medicines abruptly — with a few, stopping suddenly is more dangerous than the side effect. If you have a severe reaction such as breathing difficulty or widespread rash, come to the emergency department.
