Conditions treated

The Dermatology department assesses and treats conditions including these. Where we have a page explaining a condition, it is linked.

  • Acne
  • Fungal skin infection
  • Eczema and dermatitis
  • Hair loss
  • Pigmentation
  • Skin allergy

This describes the scope of the department. It is general information and not a diagnosis — please speak to a doctor about your own symptoms.

About the dermatology department

Skin conditions are visible, and that changes how people experience them. Acne, pigmentation and hair loss affect confidence as much as comfort, and they deserve proper treatment rather than a cycle of over-the-counter creams.

Our dermatology department treats conditions of the skin, hair and nails: infections, inflammatory conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, allergic reactions, acne, and hair loss.

When to see a dermatologist

Come in for any of these.

  • A rapidly spreading rash with fever or feeling unwell — come in the same day
  • A mole or spot that is changing in size, shape or colour, or bleeding
  • Acne that is scarring, or is not responding to treatment
  • Itching that disturbs sleep
  • A rash that keeps coming back, or is spreading
  • Hair loss that is sudden, patchy, or progressing
  • Recurring fungal infection of skin or nails
  • Patches of altered pigmentation

If you are not sure, treat it as urgent

It is always better to be assessed and sent home than to wait at home with something serious. Emergency care needs no appointment.

What we provide

  • Acne treatment

Treatment matched to the type and severity of acne, with the aim of preventing scarring rather than only clearing current spots.

  • Eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis

Managing inflammatory skin conditions long term, including identifying what triggers flare-ups.

  • Fungal and bacterial skin infections

Accurate diagnosis and adequate treatment — under-treated fungal infection is a very common reason these recur.

  • Hair loss

Identifying the cause — hormonal, nutritional, autoimmune or hereditary — because treatment depends entirely on which it is.

  • Pigmentation disorders

Assessment and treatment of melasma, vitiligo and post-inflammatory pigmentation.

  • Allergy and drug reactions

Assessment of skin reactions and identification of the likely cause.

How we investigate

Most skin diagnosis is visual and clinical, supported by sampling where the diagnosis is unclear.

  • Clinical examination, including magnified examination of lesions
  • Skin scraping or swab where infection is suspected
  • Skin biopsy where a diagnosis cannot be made on appearance alone
  • Blood tests for the hormonal, nutritional and autoimmune causes of skin and hair problems

What to expect

So that nothing about the visit is a surprise.

  1. 1

Examination of the skin, hair or nails

Most dermatology diagnosis is made by looking carefully, so the examination itself does much of the work.

  2. 2

Sampling, where the diagnosis is not clear on sight

A scraping, swab or biopsy, only where appearance alone cannot confirm what it is.

  3. 3

    Discussion of what we found

What the diagnosis is and what is driving it, so treatment addresses the cause rather than the symptom alone.

  4. 4

    Treatment and follow-up

Medication or a topical routine, with review to check it is working and adjust if not.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my fungal infection keep coming back?

Most often because treatment was stopped as soon as it looked better, rather than continued for the full course. Damp clothing, shared towels and untreated family members also keep reinfecting. Proper diagnosis matters too — several conditions look like fungal infection and do not respond to antifungals.

Can hair loss be treated?

Frequently, yes — but it depends entirely on the cause. Hair loss from iron or thyroid deficiency, or after an illness or pregnancy, often recovers once the cause is corrected. Hereditary pattern loss can be slowed with treatment. Identifying which you have is the first step and usually involves a blood test.

When should I get a mole checked?

If it is changing — growing, changing shape or colour, developing an irregular border, itching, or bleeding. A mole that looks clearly different from your others is also worth showing someone.
