About our diagnostics
Diagnostics is where a suspicion becomes a diagnosis. Nearly every department depends on it, and having it on site is the difference between finishing an investigation in one visit and coming back three times.
Our diagnostic services support outpatient clinics, inpatients, the emergency department and health checkups, with imaging and cardiac testing alongside the pathology laboratory.
When you would come here
Almost always because a doctor has asked for a specific test.
- Imaging requested by a department after your consultation
- Urgent investigation ordered from the emergency department
- Tests forming part of a health checkup package
- Monitoring of a long-term condition such as diabetes or kidney disease
- Investigation before surgery, as part of pre-operative assessment
- Follow-up imaging to check whether treatment is working
What we provide
Imaging
Imaging of the chest, abdomen, bones and joints to support diagnosis across the hospital's departments.
Cardiac testing
ECG, echocardiography and exercise testing, supporting the cardiology department and pre-operative assessment.
Support for the emergency department
Urgent investigations available to emergency patients, so decisions are not delayed waiting on results.
Health checkup testing
The imaging and testing that make up preventive and full body health checkups.
Pre-operative investigation
Tests needed before an operation, arranged alongside the surgical appointment rather than separately.
Reporting
Results go to the doctor who requested them, and are explained to you at your follow-up rather than handed over without context.
What to expect
So that nothing about the visit is a surprise.
- 1
Booking and preparation
You book with any preparation explained in advance, such as fasting, so the test is not wasted on the day.
- 2
The test itself
Most imaging and cardiac tests take from a few minutes to under an hour, depending on what is being done.
- 3
Reporting
Results go to the doctor who requested the test, usually the same day for routine tests.
- 4
Discussion at follow-up
Your doctor explains what the results mean and what happens next, rather than leaving you to interpret a report alone.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an appointment for a test?
For most imaging and cardiac tests, yes — please book, and bring the request from your doctor. Tests ordered from the emergency department or for admitted patients are arranged by the treating team.
How long do results take?
It varies by test. Many routine results are available the same day; some specialised tests take longer. You will be told when to expect yours, and urgent investigations are prioritised.
Do I need to prepare or fast?
Some tests require fasting or other preparation, and some do not. You will be told what applies when you book. If you are unsure, ask before the appointment rather than arriving unprepared and having to return.
Can I get a test done without seeing a doctor first?
Health checkup packages can be booked directly. For individual investigations we would rather you saw a doctor first — the right test depends on the question being asked, and an unnecessary test can be as unhelpful as no test.
