About the critical care department
Critical care looks after patients who are seriously unwell enough to need continuous monitoring and support for failing organs — after major surgery, during severe infection, or when breathing or circulation cannot be maintained without help.
Our critical care team works across the intensive care unit, the emergency department and the operation theatres, so a patient who deteriorates anywhere in the hospital is managed by the same team in the same building.

What is the difference between the ICU and critical care?
The intensive care unit is the place — the ward with the monitoring and equipment. Critical care is the specialty and the team that provides care there, and who also assess deteriorating patients elsewhere in the hospital.
Can family visit a patient in intensive care?
Yes, but visiting is more restricted than on a general ward, because patients are seriously unwell and vulnerable to infection. Please check the current arrangements with the nursing staff, and expect the numbers and times to be limited.
How long do patients stay in intensive care?
It varies enormously — from overnight observation after surgery to a much longer stay in severe illness. The team will keep you updated on progress and on what needs to improve before a patient can move to a general ward.
