About our emergency care
The emergency department is the front door for anything urgent. No appointment, no referral — you walk in, and how quickly you are seen depends on how unwell you are rather than when you arrived.
It matters that this sits on the same site as the intensive care unit, the operation theatres, imaging and the laboratory. A patient with chest pain, a serious injury or severe abdominal pain can be assessed, scanned, operated on and admitted without being transferred somewhere else at the worst possible moment.
Come to emergency for
Any of these. If you are unsure whether something counts, treat it as urgent — it is always better to be assessed and sent home.
- Chest pain or pressure, particularly with sweating, nausea or breathlessness
- Sudden or severe difficulty breathing
- Signs of a stroke: face drooping, weakness on one side, slurred speech
- Severe bleeding, a deep wound, or a serious injury or fall
- Fits, unconsciousness, or someone who cannot be woken
- Severe abdominal pain, particularly with vomiting or fever
- High fever in a baby, or a child who is drowsy, breathing hard or refusing fluids
- A rash that does not fade when you press on it
- Being unable to pass urine at all
- Poisoning, overdose, burns, or a snake or animal bite

On-site investigation
Imaging and laboratory testing available to the emergency department, so decisions are not delayed waiting for results from elsewhere.
Direct access to theatre and intensive care
Where a patient needs an operation or organ support, they move within the same building rather than being transferred out.
Admission or discharge with a plan
Patients who can go home leave with clear written instructions and the warning signs that mean they should come back.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an appointment for the emergency department?
No. Emergency care never requires an appointment or a referral. Come directly to the emergency entrance.
Why was someone who arrived after me seen first?
Because emergency departments work by clinical urgency, not arrival order. Someone with chest pain or a serious injury will be seen ahead of a less urgent problem, however long the latter has waited. If your condition changes while you are waiting, tell the staff immediately.
What should I bring?
A photo ID, any medicines you take or a photograph of them, previous reports if they are to hand, and your insurance details if you have cover. Do not delay coming in to collect any of it.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, and it helps — a family member can give history if you are unwell and handle registration while you are being assessed. Space in the treatment area is limited, so usually one person accompanies the patient inside.
