What it is

A full body health checkup groups a set of routine tests into a single visit, to give an overall picture of your health and to look for the conditions that commonly develop silently — diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, anaemia, and early changes in kidney, liver or thyroid function.

The value is not in the number of tests. It is in catching something while it is still easy to treat, and in having a baseline to compare against in a few years' time.

Who it is for

A health check is most useful for people with no symptoms — because that is exactly when these conditions are found.

  • Adults over 40, as a periodic baseline
  • Earlier if you have a family history of diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure
  • Anyone who smokes, is overweight, or is largely inactive
  • People under sustained work stress, sleeping poorly or eating irregularly
  • Anyone who has not had blood pressure or blood sugar checked in over a year
  • Before starting a new exercise programme after years of inactivity

What it covers

A health check typically combines measurements, blood and urine testing, and basic cardiac and imaging assessment. The exact panel is confirmed when you book.

  • Measurements and history

Height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure and pulse, with a review of your history, medicines and family history.

  • Blood testing

Blood count, blood sugar, cholesterol, kidney function, liver function and thyroid function.

  • Urine testing

Screening for protein, sugar and signs of infection — often the earliest indication of kidney involvement.

  • Cardiac assessment

An ECG, with further cardiac testing if anything on it warrants a closer look.

  • Imaging as indicated

Chest or abdominal imaging where the history or examination suggests it would be useful.

  • Consultation on the results

A doctor goes through the findings with you and explains what, if anything, needs acting on. This is the part that makes the tests worth doing.

How to prepare

Simple, but it affects the accuracy of several results.

  • Fast for eight to twelve hours beforehand — water is fine and encouraged
  • Take your regular medicines unless specifically told otherwise; ask about diabetes medication in particular
  • Bring previous reports if you have them, so results can be compared rather than read in isolation
  • Bring a list of everything you take, including supplements
  • Avoid alcohol and heavy exertion for 24 hours beforehand
  • Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that roll up easily
  • Women: mention if you are pregnant, or think you might be, before any imaging

After the checkup

Results are explained to you by a doctor rather than handed over as a sheet of numbers. A single value slightly outside a reference range very often means less than it appears to, and context is the whole point of the consultation.

Where something needs following up, you will be told what, how urgently, and which department. Where everything is normal, you will have a baseline that makes the next check considerably more informative.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I have a full body checkup?

For most healthy adults, every one to two years is reasonable, and annually from around 50 or if you have risk factors. More frequent testing without a reason rarely adds anything — and can lead to chasing incidental findings.

Do I need to fast?

Yes, generally eight to twelve hours for accurate blood sugar and cholesterol results. Water is fine and you should keep drinking it. Ask specifically about your diabetes medication if you take any, since fasting changes the advice.

Is a health checkup worth it if I feel fine?

That is precisely when it is most useful. Diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol typically cause no symptoms for years while doing damage. Feeling well is not evidence that these are normal.
